# Audio tracks and subtitles

## Pick a track while watching

Open the **gear menu** in the player (on Apple TV, use the **Audio** and **Subtitles** pills):

- **Audio** lists the available audio tracks.
- **Subtitles** lists subtitle tracks, plus **Off**.

Your choice is **remembered for that movie or show** — pick Japanese audio on one episode and the whole series keeps it.

## Default languages

Set global defaults in **Settings → Player → Default Languages**, with separate pickers for **Audio** and **Subtitles**. They apply when playback starts; a per-title choice made in the player always overrides them. The subtitle default can also be **Off** to never auto-enable subtitles.

## Subtitle appearance

**Settings → Player → Subtitles** styles text subtitles (SRT, VTT):

- **Font** — including the accessibility-focused Atkinson Hyperlegible and OpenDyslexic.
- **Size** — seven steps from Tiny to Very Large.
- **Color**, **Background** (outline, shadow, semi-transparent, opaque), and **Bold**.

ASS/SSA subtitles keep their own built-in styling by design.

## External subtitle files

For Plex, Jellyfin, Emby, SMB, and WebDAV content, Dion automatically discovers sidecar subtitle files next to your video — SRT, VTT, ASS/SSA, SMI, MicroDVD/SubViewer, and VobSub pairs — and offers them in the Subtitles menu like any other track.

## Fine-tuning sync

On iPhone and iPad, the gear menu's **Advanced** sheet adjusts **Audio Delay** and **Subtitle Delay** in 50 ms steps (up to ±1 second) when a track is slightly out of sync. Subtitle delay adjustment is part of [Dion Pro](/support/getting-started/what-is-dion-pro).
